Course Description

This advanced diploma program provides a rigorous, integrated study of Intellectual Property (IP) Law and its central role in driving and sustaining Innovation and Technological Development. It is designed for IP professionals, R&D managers, technologists, and business strategists seeking to move beyond legal compliance to leverage IP as a strategic asset. The curriculum offers an in-depth analysis of the entire innovation lifecycle—from ideation and R&D funding to market commercialization—examining how Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights, and Trade Secrets are strategically used to secure market position and competitive advantage.

Key areas of focus include IP strategy formulation and alignment with business goals, IP valuation for investment and merger/acquisition decisions, mastering licensing and technology transfer agreements, and managing open innovation challenges (e.g., open source, collaborative R&D). Emphasis is placed on cross-border IP issues, risk management, and the legal challenges posed by emerging technologies and digital transformation.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Analyze and articulate the strategic link between Intellectual Property (IP) and innovation policy, utilizing IP assets to create and maintain sustained competitive advantage.

  2. Master the process of IP strategy formulation, including patent portfolio management, trademark brand strategy, and developing robust trade secret protection programs.

  3. Evaluate and apply advanced methodologies for IP valuation (e.g., market, income, cost approaches) to inform business decisions, litigation, and financial reporting.

  4. Design and structure complex IP commercialization agreements, such as licensing, franchising, and technology transfer contracts, optimizing revenue generation.

  5. Critically assess the IP challenges inherent in open innovation models, collaborative R&D, and the legal implications of Open Source Software (OSS).
