Course Description

This Certificate program offers a specialized and integrated study of the theories, principles, and techniques used in both Group Counseling and Family Therapy. It is designed to equip participants with the skills to facilitate change within complex interpersonal systems rather than focusing solely on the individual. The curriculum provides an in-depth understanding of systemic thinking, which is foundational to both modalities, viewing individuals as embedded within family and group contexts.

Key areas of study include the stages of group development, the roles and dynamics within a therapeutic group, models of family structure and functioning (e.g., structural, strategic, Bowenian family therapy), and techniques for managing conflict and facilitating communication in both settings. Emphasis is placed on ethical considerations unique to group and family work, such as managing confidentiality and addressing boundary issues. This certificate is essential for counselors, social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health professionals seeking specialized competence in systemic interventions.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Analyze and articulate the core systemic principles that underpin both group and family counseling, contrasting them with individual therapy.

  2. Identify and manage the stages of group development (e.g., forming, storming, norming, performing) and effectively facilitate group dynamics and member roles.

  3. Apply foundational techniques from major family therapy models (e.g., Structural, Strategic, Experiential) to assess and intervene in family systems.

  4. Master the skills required to establish and maintain therapeutic boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical practice within group and family settings.

  5. Design and lead therapeutic interventions aimed at improving communication, resolving chronic conflict, and promoting functional boundaries within both groups and families.

  6. Evaluate the effectiveness of group and family interventions using appropriate assessment and feedback tools.
